For Years I have watched you
in your solitude;
with your majestic branches
held high against the sky,
defying the elements.

You stood tall, proud, and resilient
against the ravages of wind,
rain and drought; like a towering
guardian rooted firmly between Heaven
and Mother Earth's sheltering depths.

Each Spring I rejoiced,
when the mocking birds
returned to nest within your
open arms, and humbly offered
repayment through the beauty
of their songs.

I have praised your name
for the refreshing shade
you bestowed to each passerby
through the long hot months of summer,
while you tirelessly held
our smallest wildlife brethren
close to your nurturing breast.

I have smiled on those autumn days
watching the children play
without a care as they teetered
from your able limbs,
and laughed as you sent
a cascade of brilliant leaves
dancing through their hair.

How glorious you were
as you slept in winter,
adorned in a thousand
glistening lights that had
been strewn about your
canopy like a crown.

You were my friend,
and source of inspiration...
We shared the same breath,
the same song,
the same spark of creation.

Yet today, as I gaze
upon the empty space
that once held your place,
I stand broken-hearted,
and wonder...how they ever
could have cut you down.

This solitary tree! a living thing
produced too slowly ever to decay;
of form and aspect too magnificent
To be destroyed.

William Wordsworth
"Yardley Oak"

Trees are the best monuments
that a man can erect to his own memory.
They speak his praises without flattery,
and they are a blessing
to children yet unborn.

Lord Orrery 1749.
